LA Chaim
Connecting Life in Israel and Los Angeles
Welcome to the features section of LA-Chaim. Here we
endeavor to focus on events, people and institutions that
work to strengthen the already close ties between Israel
and Southern California. Often the issues touched on in
these pages will involve religious, economic and cultural
fields, sowing the integrated and harmonious nature of
these international leaders.
To be Jewish and truly say “l'Chaim” in Los Angeles means a host of things to different groups of Jews from diverse countries, denominations and ethnic backgrounds. For some immigrants, cross-national business is booming and wine glasses are quite literally being clinked. Israelis who go into real estate and contracting work fare well here are learn the market quickly. This process is aided substantially by all of the networks and organizations that are already in place to welcome and educate newcomers. But what about those American Jews who long for Israel and want to dig into the soil, quite literally? Look under “Destination: Israel” (below) to find links to organizations that aid in relocation, vacations, and educational trips to Israel, or “Destination: L.A.” to find links here at home that aid foreigners with the naturalization process.
“Destination: Israel” is a wonderful organization that allows all Jews ages 21-26 to travel with a group to Italy. Taglit is a national organization that has a special relationship with L.A. and entitles one of their special Israeli tours the “Los-Angeles Community Trip.”
Cafe' Europa is a fantastic organization that is hard to place in this site because it serves Holocaust survivors and Jews in both places, regardless of whether or not they make the trip from Los Angeles to Israel or vice versa. In this cyber cafe', Jews in both places get to know one another through regular conferencing. Recently, a historic meeting took place in which fourteen survivors from LA flew to Israel and spent a week with their 'Europa' friends. Together, they took a trip to Massada and the Dead Sea. Some of the survivors have reconnected with friends and family through this process.
“Destination: L.A.”
Israeli Business Network of Beverly Hills is a wonderful organization that unites Israelis and Jews in the Beverly Hills area to network, socialize, promote their businesses, and gain more visibility in the community.
The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles has a wide spectrum of offerings to assist new immigrants with the naturalization process. They also have money set aside for emergency relief and programs for educational tutoring.
